Apfelstrudel is a classic and beloved dessert that originates from Austria but is also very popular in many Central and Eastern European countries, including Germany and Hungary. It’s a delicious pastry filled with spiced apples, raisins, and sugar, all wrapped in thin, flaky layers of dough. The name "Apfelstrudel" translates to "apple whirl" in German, which is a fitting description of the spiral shape of the pastry when sliced.

Key Ingredients:

  • Apples: Tart apples, like Granny Smith or Bramley, are often used, as they provide a nice contrast to the sweetness of the other ingredients.
  • Raisins: These add a little chewy texture and sweetness to the filling.
  • Cinnamon and Sugar: The apples are spiced with cinnamon and sweetened with sugar, creating a warm, comforting flavor.
  • Dough: Traditional Apfelstrudel is made with a thin, elastic dough that is stretched to a very thin layer. The dough is then wrapped around the filling and baked until golden and crispy.
  • Butter: Often brushed on top of the dough to give it a rich, golden color.

Serving:

Apfelstrudel is typically served warm, often with a dusting of powdered sugar on top. It’s often paired with vanilla sauce, whipped cream, or even a scoop of vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence. In Austria, it's commonly enjoyed with a cup of coffee or Melange (a type of coffee similar to a cappuccino).

Fun Fact:

Making Apfelstrudel from scratch can be a bit of an art, especially when it comes to stretching the dough thin enough to be almost translucent. However, many people opt for pre-made puff pastry or phyllo dough for convenience, though traditionalists may still make their dough from scratch.
